Officially designated as 'Jacket Winter, Combat', the very first 'Tankers', had open-top patch pockets but they changed this design feature to slash style pockets shortly after production began. It was originally intended for all branches of the U.S. Army, as a general issue winter jacket. However, it was to become the official outfit for U.S. Armoured troops, hence its nickname - 'Tanker jacket'. Ironically, it still managed to find its way into the hands of many other units of the Army, such as the Infantry, and, strangely enough the Air Force, where it was often favoured above their own designs. The U.S.A.A.F. realised they needed a jacket for their fighter pilots that was less bulky than the sheepskin garments, but still offered a high degree of warmth; especially for the P-38 'Lightnings', which were particularly cold and cramped. Eventually, the B-10, among others, provided the answer, but until then the Tanker was on official issue to the P-38 pilots! This reproduction of the Tanker jacket, is the best you'll ever see! Details include: Top quality 100% cotton Khaki 12oz twill for the shell, 100% kearsey wool blanket lining, 100% wool knit cuffs, collar and waistband, authentic Crown zip, pleated bi-swing back and authentic printed linen label. It will serve you as heartily as an original - whether slugging up the 'boot' in 1944, streaking across the stratosphere at 30,000 ft, or worn with blue jeans and a sweater while combating urban traffic in your contemporary 'mechanised mount'!
