By 1950, the M422A had become the G-1. This tried and tested design, it was felt, was still appropriate for the Navy aviator. In fact, it was still appropriate enough to survive right up until present day. It became however, more of a status symbol than a functional piece of equipment as time went by.
It went through several spec changes throughout its history, but the basic design hasn't changed very much. The G-1 still looks like a G-1! The first version (spec 55J14) however, was certainly the best quality like most traditional products in our material world, the quality of the materials seem to decline with the process of time.
The G-1 55J14, was made from the same high quality veg tanned Goatskin as the M422A. It also retained the rayon satin quality lining (later models utilised nylon), in a much darker Burgundy shade than the M422A though, as well as the 100% wool knit with its unique weave.
We have selected the first spec G-1 (55J14), as the version most appropriate to reproduce. Not only is it the oldest version, thus having more vintage appeal, it is the one which actually had a combat application - it was used extensively during the Korean war! Also, being made of higher quality materials than the later specs, we felt you would prefer this model!
Our G-1 55J14 is made from the same quality Goatskin as our M422A, but in a darker shade of brown. The real mouton sheepskin collar is stencilled behind, with the initials 'U.S.N.' the 55J14 was the only spec G-1 to have this, the next generation having the initials perforated down the windflap instead.
Other authentic details include:
dark burgundy rayon satin lining, 100% wool knit, authentic Talon zipper, a bi-swing back and correct woven spec label.
Available in sizes: 34 - 48.
