BENZOYL PEROXIDE (ACNECIDE, BREVOXYL, QUINODERM, PANOXYL, BENZAMYCIN)
Benzoyl peroxide has been on the market for quite a long time and has been found very effective for mild acne. Most sufferers usually start treatment with a product containing this agent. Benzoyl peroxide works as an antibacterial and a keratolytic.
Preparations containing Benzoyl peroxide are effective in mild to moderate acne. It is best to start with a low concentration (2.5-5%) preparation of these products as they are as effective as the higher concentrations ones (10%). Benzoyl peroxide reduces inflammation BUT an initial skin irritation is usual on first starting treatment and rarely some people may develop a contact allergic dermatitis, which may need treatment with a mild cortisone cream. The skin often goes red and tightens and starts to scale and flake. This can usually be reduced by starting with a weak product and using it every second day before using it once daily before increasing the application to twice a day and using a moisturizing preparation as well .If your acne does not respond to BENZOYL PEROXIDE after about 2 months, you should either ADD another topical acne product to the treatment regime or seek a prescription for a topical Antibiotic preparation.
Caution during use:
You should be careful not to apply this product anywhere near the eyes, mouth and lips. Benzoyl peroxide has a BLEACHING action and so you should be careful with FABRICS (especially clothes, pillows and bedding) and HAIR.You should also avoid strong sunlight after application of this chemical. How much and how often do I apply?
It is best to apply ALL OVER the treatment area, not just the pimples/zits. Start with a low strength product and gradually build up to the stronger product and apply once a day for a while before increasing frequency to twice a day.

AZELAIC ACID (SKINOREN)
This chemical has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory as well as anticomedonal properties. Azelaic acid appears to normalise the excessive shedding of skin cells within the follicle. It can be used as an alternative to BENZOYL PEROXIDE in cases where this is not well tolerated. Azelaic acid is particularly good for mild to moderate acne on the face. It also causes less skin irritation than Benzoyl peroxide. Azelaic acid is often used to treat pigmentation resulting from inflammatory acne.
Caution during use:
Avoid use if you are pregnant or breast-feeding.
Be careful not to apply too near the eyes.
Avoid strong sunlight after application to reduce risk of a PHOTOSENSITIVE reaction.
Irritation is rare but if you suffer this stop using it for a while before starting again or use it every second day for a while before applying it everyday.
How much and how often do I apply?
For sensitive skin once a day is advisable otherwise twice a day application is usual. You may not see results for a long time after starting treatment (up-to 3 months). However, if after 6 months of continuous treatment you see no improvement, it is time to switch to another product.
