Three module intensive course.

Interoperability between healthcare computer systems depends on us developing, implementing and deploying appropriate standards, such as HL7 and SNOMED CT.

Principles of Health Interoperability HL7 and SNOMED provides a clear introduction to these standards, explaining the core principles for the health IT professional.

Introducing Interoperability and HL7 V2.

At the end of this module you will understand:

  • The differences between technical, semantic and process interoperability
  • Why interoperability is hard and how to make it easier
  • Why standards are so important
  • What HL7 is and what it does
  • How to find your way around the HL7 V2 documentation
  • HL7 V2 message structure and data types
  • The HL7 UK V2 Profile
  • HL7 V2 XML
  • NHS Interoperability Development Kit (IDK)

HL7 V3 RIM, CDA and IHE XDS.

At the end of this module you will understand:

  • The rationale for developing HL7 V3
  • The HL7 V3 Reference Information Model (RIM) backbone and classes
  • HL7 V3 RIM attributes and data types
  • Constrained information models and RMIMs
  • Implementable Technology Specifications (ITS) using XML
  • The HL7 V3 dynamic model and message wrappers
  • Why HL7 Clinical document architecture is so popular

  • Why clinical terminology is so important
  • Legacy coding systems - ICD, OPCS and Read Codes
  • SNOMED CT origins and objectives
  • The benefits of a reference terminology
  • SNOMED CT core components - concepts, descriptions, relationships and the SNOMED CT identifier
  • SNOMED CT Expressions - pre- and post-coordination
  • The SNOMED CT Concept Model (allowed relationships)
  • Extensions and sub-sets
  • Mapping to other coding systems
  • Models of use and navigation
  • Using Hl7 and SNOMED CT together - resolving the overlap

    Participation fees are:

    • All three modules: £560 (plus VAT at 17.5% = ££658)
    • Each module separately: £225 (plus VAT at 17.5% = £264.38)
