Original Type A-1 (A-6A) Flying Boots - Unissued

The Type A-6 Flying Boot was standardized on March 27th 1937. It was designed as an 'overshoe' i.e. the wearer would wear his normal service shoe inside the flying boot. As part of the 'heavy zone' flight suit which incorporated the B-3 jacket and A-3 trousers, the A-6 boot was issued to all USAAF bomber aircrew.

It has a rubber galosh type bottom - normal leather and sheepskin flying boots would soon become saturated, when walking around in the wet grass of an airfield - not a good start to a sub-zero 13 hour flight. The A-6 was designed with this in mind.

By 1944 the A-6 had become the A-6A, being modified with the addition of two straps - one across the arch and the other around the ankle, to help keep the boot securely attached.

By the early 50s this enduring design was re-designated the A-1. Identical to the A-6A, the A-1 differed only in as much as the nomenclature label now incorporated a size designation for women. The boot is otherwise absolutely identical in every way.

We have recently acquired a limited quantity of original unissued stock of the A-1 flying boot, which we offer here. They even come in their original Bristolite box of issue, along with original felt insoles.(However, please note; the boxes are 50+ years old, and in various states of condition, so please do not expect an absolutely pristine box - this is merely a bonus bit of packaging that adds to the item's provenance of originality).

The leather, sheepskin and rubber are in absolutely 100% perfect condition - as good as the day they were made. The polyacrylate lacquer has some crazing here and there, but this is completely normal for original WWII USAAF sheepskin garments. The condition rating is a firm 10/10/.

Sizes available are Small and Medium only.

However, as these are designed as an overshoe, they are actually a lot larger than a normal boot would be. If you are intending to display as part of a collection, or may be even wear for living history type re-enactments it is of course not necessary to wear shoes inside (nor indeed desirable). Therefore the Small and Medium are appropriate for larger foot size than indicated. Small is good for foot size 7-9, and Medium 10-11. Due to their soft and baggy kind of fit, width is certainly not a problem either.

We have only a limited stock of these, so they will not be available for long, as they are sure to be snapped up very quickly.

They are an amazing offering considering their condition and originality - unlikely to ever be available again after these are gone!

Please note: Although their condition and serviceability is as good as the day they were made, and would no doubt function admirably, these boots are still 50+ years old. They are sold as military antiques, i.e. collectibles. They are not warranteed for practical application.
